The initial thing I noted about the bridge was the quality of fit and finish: the work was clean and suberb. But a weird thing happened: I recently tried Black Diamond strings and had to go back to a straight bridge on both my banjos. Bridge for years. However it just needed that final tweak. The banjo sounded a bit thin on tone and didn't have good bass response, so I figured it was that it was new and needed to settle in. Because the wood is much drier than most other bridges I have tried, this means you can have a slightly thicker/taller bidge without the normal change in tone and volume usually associated with them. I have a very old Vega Folklore long neck, the cheap one with the wooden tone rim. Fourth sting is clean, crispand deep voiced, and theoverall sound has to be experienced! There was far less bleed between the strings. I dont think its necessarily easy to work with; Ive cut some tailpiecves and other things from that wood before. Mostly I play below the 7th fret and that has let me set up the banjo to be fairly plunky but pretty decent from the 7th fret down and I thought I was pretty happy with the whole deal.When I opened the package last night my first impression was geez this is a work of art not a bridge and I sort of just stared at it for a half hour trying to figure out how anyone could possibly make something with that many curves and tapers and still get perfect symmetry. The string slots are cut very cleanly. I just tried a new Douglas Fir Spillway Dam 5/8 std. I bought one hesitantly to test the difference between it and a Kateyz bridge, still sounds great and at a lower price. An easy recommendation if you're looking to try a new bridge or two! I have a very nice Nechville banjo that was very well set up but just shy of everything that it could deliver in the tone/sound department. First things first, what I think is fantastic banjo tone might be different than you. Both bridges were exceptional, but I was especially impressed by David's two-footed model. I just slipped the bridge under the strings with my old bridge in place and switched it out for the new one with a quick check on the intonation, and I was ready to play. Simply terrific!! The bridge is an upgraded sound but I found the bridge lacking as far as being totally ready to go on the banjo. A great bridge. The only way to know for sure is to try it out yourself. The camo frog gives me a louder max volume and I believe it gives me a quieter useful minimum as well (ie it seemed more responsive to a softer touch). Luckily for me he agreed to do them but he had to specially set up his machines because he had never done these sizes before. Not all bridges are THE ONE, because not all deliver the ENTIRE spectrum of satisfaction! Together with the string spacing, which Bart customized for me, this makes the bridge feel highly comfortable in playing. Very well built. I have a very old Vega Folklore long neck, the cheap one with the wooden tone rim. However, I felt that the banjo's tone and volume could use a bit of a tweak, so after many recommendations I opted for Bart's bridge. It's vertically laminated, which is a totally new fancy feature that was previously unknown to me (and may explain why it sounds so much better than any of the other bridges I've tried out).It is absolutely beautiful. The new bridge keeps all the bass, adds top end sparkle (but no harshness) and helps every note pop even more than before, and it was also good at that. If you order a bridge of a specific height, weight, and string spacing, you will receive *exactly* that. No buzzing and the clarity is very good. Then, as the summer of 2011 rolled around we had a different issue to work through. Well, I put on the bridge, intonated the instrument and was laying down tracks within minutes. The Snuffy Smith may have been a bit louder, but the tone was noticeably improved with the Katzeye. Likely it had a poor setup prior but the Archie certainly allowed the subtleties of this banjo to come right out. Virgil was offering 14" radius. It is on my Nechville Galaxy Custom job with tunneled 5th string. But no. The 4th string slot does not swallow the string - something I particularly like since a swallowed D-string tends to impart a rather muddy quality to the note. Also, has a more metallic ring to it which I particularly like; woody bridges lack bite and sizzle, this just rings and rings. The final choice was a combination of his "enigma" and "mystery" woods. This, more than anything else, is really good to my ear. Will put these on my other banjos. The only detractor , If I had to find one would be the finish.I think it could be sanded smoother purly for asthetics but Dave does'nt charge that much for these things so I really should'nt rock the boat. Replaced my original Mastertone bridge with one from Bart Veerman. Although, others may perceive a minor reduction in volume, I believe this is due to the banjo being less 'harsh'. A banjo can be twangy and sweet- it doesn't have to cut glass. Gary Sosebee's manufacturing quality is excellent . I could not imagine there was such potential in my old Mutt. My observations are that although the bridge is somewhat smaller than the factory bridge, there is plenty of volume and the notes seem "rounder" and more "civilized", seeming to lose their hard edges. So I reordered for my Scruggs except this time I opted for the Sweet II. The banjo sounds about 40% louder and has a lot of punch and clarity. This bridge cost $17.50 AUS, and I recommend it for this Banjo (tailpiece is stock) with these strings. Tim makes great bridges. You really got to try this bridge. The workmanship is spot on and I can tell there has been trouble taken to get the cut of the timber just right. David contacted me before he began to work to make sure he knew what I was after.
